Its story
The old settlement of Besni was built on the rocky slopes near today's district center; the remains of mosques, a hammam and houses from the eventually abandoned town have survived. The prayer hall of the Ulu Mosque (Grand Mosque) has collapsed, leaving only its minaret standing; one of its inscriptions shows that the mosque was built in the 15th century under the Dulkadirids or the Mamluks, and that its minaret was built in 1565 by the architect Numan el-Osmani. The nearby Bekir Bey Hammam was part of a complex commissioned in the early 16th century by the Mamluk commander Bekir Bey and is now in ruins. The stone fabric of the old town is appealing for photography.
