Its story
In ancient inscriptions, Perre is mentioned as one of the main cities of the Kingdom of Commagene, along with Samosata, Germanicia and Doliche. It was an important stopping point on the road from the capital Samosata over the Taurus Mountains to Melitene (Malatya); in the Byzantine period it is known to have sent a representative to the Council of Nicaea. The hundreds of rock tombs carved into the slopes and the abundant spring, famous since antiquity and still flowing from a Roman fountain today, are the site's most striking remains. Excavation and restoration work is ongoing. It is only 5 km from the city center.
