Its story
Mount Ağrı is a volcanic massif consisting of the 5,137-meter Greater Ağrı (Atatürk Summit) and the 3,896-meter Lesser Ağrı; the two cones are separated by the Serdarbulak Pass. The ice cap covering its summit is Turkey's largest glacier. The mountain is also identified with the narrative of Noah's Flood and has been within Ağrı Dağı National Park since 2004. The classic (southern) route most used for tourist climbs starts from the village of Eli, about 15 km from Doğubayazıt: on the first day you climb to the 3,200 m camp, on the second to the 4,200 m camp at the foot of the glacier, and on the third day you go to the summit and back. The location in this entry is the 3,200 m campsite where guided groups stay. The climb is possible in the summer months for fit people accompanied by a guide; however, high altitude, crevasses, rockfall and water scarcity in summer are serious risks. For those who want to see the mountain without climbing it, the area around İshak Paşa Palace and the Doğubayazıt plain are strong viewpoints.
