Ağzıkara Han
Merkez, Aksaray
A Seljuk caravanserai with rich stone decoration on the Aksaray–Nevşehir road; its covered section was completed in 1231 and its courtyard in 1240.
Its story
According to the inscriptions, the covered section of the han was completed in June 1231 during the reign of Alâeddin Keykubad I and the courtyard section in February 1240 during the reign of Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev II; its patron was Mes'ud, son of Abdullah. It is considered one of the most richly decorated caravanserais built not by a sultan but by an emir. The kiosk mosque in the middle of the courtyard, the muqarnas portals and the geometric interlace stand out. It is part of the route of Seljuk caravanserais on the UNESCO Tentative List. Whether the interior is open to visitors may vary from time to time.
