History and archaeology / Han and caravanserai
Alay Han
Merkez, Aksaray
One of the earliest Seljuk caravanserais in Anatolia, on the Aksaray–Nevşehir road, dated to the reign of Kılıç Arslan II.
Its story
Known in the Seljuk period as the Pervane Ribâtı, the han is dated to the 12th century, the reign of Kılıç Arslan II; some researchers propose the early 13th century. It spreads over an area of about 2 thousand square meters on sloping ground; it is thought to take its name from a nearby village. The General Directorate of Foundations restored it between 2008 and 2011, and the remains of a large building complex in front of it were uncovered by excavation. Its current visiting status is uncertain; the building can be seen from outside.
