Çanlı Church
Merkez, Aksaray
One of Cappadocia's rare cut-stone Byzantine churches, rising amid a rock-cut settlement between Akhisar and Çeltek.
Safety warning
Its story
Çanlı Church stands on a grassy hill backed by a steep cliff, about 15 km southeast of Aksaray. This domed church, built in the 11th-century Byzantine style with alternating courses of stone and brick, gives its name to the extensive rock-cut settlement around it. The dwellings, chapels and stables carved into the slopes reflect the fabric of a rural aristocratic settlement of the Middle Byzantine period. It is a quiet spot for exploring, away from the crowds.
