History and archaeology / Mound (höyük)
Aşıklı Höyük
Gülağaç, Aksaray
An Aceramic Neolithic village on the banks of the Melendiz, dated to 8200–7500 BC, documenting the transition to settled life; an experimental archaeology site.
Its story
Aşıklı Höyük lies about 1 km south of the village of Kızılkaya, on the banks of the Melendiz Stream. According to radiocarbon dates, the settlement continued uninterrupted from about 8200 to 7500 BC; its inhabitants were among the first communities in the region to adopt a settled life. Excavations carried out by İstanbul University since 1989 have uncovered adjoining mudbrick houses, hearths, and stone and obsidian tools. There is a protective roof over the excavation area and, next to it, an open-air area where Neolithic houses have been experimentally reconstructed.
