Kilise Mosque (Church of Saint Gregorios)
Güzelyurt, Aksaray
A church believed to have been built in the 4th century in the name of the theologian Gregory of Nazianzus, born in Gelveri, repaired in 1835 and converted into a mosque after the population exchange.
Its story
According to Ministry of Culture and Tourism sources, the church was built in 385, during the reign of Emperor Theodosius, in the name of Gregorios Theologos, one of the Cappadocian Fathers. The present building bears the marks of a major repair in 1835. After the Greek community left with the 1924 population exchange, it was converted into a mosque and remained open for worship under the name 'Büyük Kilise Camii' (Great Church Mosque). It stands in Güzelyurt's old bazaar area, surrounded by stone mansions.
