Its story
Kızıl Kilise is one of the rare early Byzantine churches in Cappadocia built of cut stone rather than carved into rock, and is dated to the 5th or 6th century. Its dome, resting on an octagonal windowed drum, and its reddish stones stand out from afar in the bare steppe. Used until the 1924 population exchange, the church then fell into ruin and was placed on the World Monuments Watch list in 2008. It is also a popular spot for night-sky and Milky Way photography.
