Sümbüllü Church
Güzelyurt, Aksaray
A rock-cut church in Ihlara Valley, striking for its two-level monastic spaces and arched facade.
Its story
Sümbüllü Church is part of a group of buildings that includes monastic spaces carved into the rock mass on two levels. Seen from the valley, its facade decorated with arched niches makes it one of the most architectural-looking structures in Ihlara. Inside are depictions of Mary and Jesus between the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, the three Hebrew youths in the furnace, and saints. Located near Ağaçaltı, it is visited together with the churches in the first section of the valley.
