Its story
Dated between the 8th and 11th centuries, the structure is a two-story monastery complex carved into the rock mass rising at the northern end of Ihlara Valley. The cathedral section is divided into three naves by two rows of columns; its upper part is thought to have been used as a fortress at one time. Around the courtyard are a kitchen, stable, guesthouse and living quarters; the kitchen's pyramid-shaped chimney stands out. Traces of frescoes including the Ascension, Nativity and Baptism scenes can be seen. It is visited together with the village's fairy chimneys and the Selime Sultan Tomb.
