Aksaray Ulu Mosque (Grand Mosque)
Merkez, Aksaray
Aksaray's grand mosque, commissioned by Karamanoğlu Mehmet Bey II in 1408–1409 and known for its carved portal.
Its story
The inscription of this mosque, set on an artificial mound, records that it was commissioned in 1408–1409 by Karamanoğlu Mehmet Bey II from the architect Mehmet Firuz Bey; it is also known as the Karamanoğlu Mosque. It underwent a major restoration in 1482–1483, and its present minaret dates from 1925. Notable features are the west portal, decorated with ornament typical of the Beylik period, and the interior with its pointed arches, which retains its original character. It lies in the historic center of town, a short walk from the Zinciriye Madrasa.
