Güvenpark and Güven Monument
Çankaya, Ankara
A Republican-era monument in Güvenpark, Kızılay, begun by Anton Hanak and completed by Josef Thorak in 1935.
Its story
Also known as the Security Monument, the work was designed as the focal point of the park laid out on Kızılay Square at the suggestion of architect Clemens Holzmeister, who prepared Ankara's development plan. The sculptures were designed by the Austrian sculptor Anton Hanak; after Hanak's death in 1934 the monument was completed by Josef Thorak and opened in 1935. The bronze figures were cast in Vienna, while the reliefs on the Mamak-stone base were made in Turkey. The figures on the front symbolize the people's trust in the security forces, and the reliefs on the back symbolize the founding of the Republic and production. Güvenpark is a meeting and resting point in the city center.
