Its story
The mosque's first structure was built as a zaviye (dervish lodge) in the early 15th century, in 1427–1428; its present appearance bears the marks of 17th- and 18th-century repairs. The tomb adjoining the mihrab wall was built for Hacı Bayram-ı Veli, who died in 1429, and is one of Ankara's most visited spiritual sites. Inside the mosque, hand-painted decoration on wood and tiles stand out. The mosque shares the same square with the Roman-era Temple of Augustus; this juxtaposition sums up the city's layered history at a glance. The surroundings were redesigned as a pedestrian square in the 2010s.
