Kurtuluş Savaşı Müzesi (War of Independence Museum, First Parliament Building)
Altındağ, Ankara
The first parliament building, where the Grand National Assembly of Turkey opened on 23 April 1920; today a museum on the War of Independence period.
Its story
This two-story building of Ankara stone was begun in 1915 as the club building of the Committee of Union and Progress. Completed once the national struggle began, it hosted the opening of the Grand National Assembly on 23 April 1920 and served as the parliament building until 1924. The proclamation of the Republic also took place in this hall. Converted into a museum in 1961, it displays the general assembly hall restored to its original layout, along with documents, photographs and weapons of the period. It is right next to Ulus Square, a few steps from the Republic Museum.
