Mehmet Akif Ersoy House Museum (Taceddin Dergâhı)
Altındağ, Ankara
The house museum in the Taceddin Dergâhı where Mehmet Âkif Ersoy stayed during the War of Independence and wrote the İstiklal Marşı (National Anthem).
Its story
The Taceddin Dergâhı (dervish lodge) was founded in the 16th century for the Celveti branch of the Bayramiye order and takes its name from Seyyid Taceddin, who is buried in its garden. During the War of Independence, the lodge's sheikh gave this two-story wooden house to Mehmet Âkif Ersoy when he came to Ankara. While staying here, the poet wrote the İstiklal Marşı (Turkish National Anthem), adopted in 1921. Long left in ruins, the house was repaired in the 1980s and opened as a museum in 1984; inside, the poet's personal belongings such as his glasses, pocket watch and manuscripts are displayed. It is close to Hamamönü, on the edge of the Hacettepe University campus.
