Ankara Painting and Sculpture Museum
Altındağ, Ankara
A museum of Turkish painting and sculpture from the late Ottoman period to the present, in the historic building constructed in 1927 as the Turkish Hearths Headquarters.
Its story
Designed by architect Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu, the building is considered one of the most striking examples of the First National Architectural Movement; it stands right next to the Ethnography Museum. Having served various functions during and after the People's Houses era, the building opened as the Painting and Sculpture Museum in 1980. The collection includes works by many artists such as Osman Hamdi Bey, Şeker Ahmet Paşa, İbrahim Çallı, Fikret Mualla and Abidin Dino. The building's historic stage continues to be used for concerts and cultural events. It is a must-see stop when touring the Republican-era buildings in Ulus.
