Its story
The castle stands on a hill on the left bank of the river in the Kura valley, about 600 meters southwest of the village of Sevimli, formerly called Veli; GoTürkiye gives its location as 18-20 km from the Hanak district center. Because the Kura River winds around three sides of the hill, it forms a natural defensive site. In the ruin area of about 170 x 150 meters are traces of megalithic structures and wall fragments belonging to an older town; in the Middle Ages a new castle was built using these stones, and the church inside is said to have been built in 954. The castle passed to the Ottomans in 1578 and to the Russians in the war of 1877-78; today it is largely in ruins. It is an impressive spot for watching the bend of the river from above.
