İlyas Bey Mosque and Complex
Didim, Aydın
A marble-clad Beylik-period mosque beside the ruins of Miletus, commissioned in 1404 by İlyas Bey, bey of Menteşe.
Its story
Construction of the İlyas Bey Mosque began in 1404 by order of İlyas Bey, the last bey of the Menteşeoğulları. Clad in marble reused from ancient Miletus, the building is one of the finest examples of Beylik-period architecture, with its richly carved stone portal and mihrab. Around the mosque is the complex, consisting of the remains of a madrasa and a hammam. It is a quiet stop, away from the crowds of the site, accompanied by birdsong.
