Nysa Ancient City
Sultanhisar, Aydın
A Hellenistic-Roman city among olive groves, built on both banks of a stream, known for its theater and library.
Its story
Nysa was founded just north of Sultanhisar, on the southern slope of the Aydın Mountains. The city spreads across both banks of the Tekkecik Deresi, which runs through its center; the stream was crossed by a tunnel beneath it and by bridges. The well-preserved theater among the olive groves, one of Anatolia's oldest libraries, the bouleuterion and the gymnasium are the main structures. The geographer Strabo is known to have studied here.
