Panionion
Kuşadası, Aydın
A sanctuary on Otomatik Tepe in Güzelçamlı, known as the common meeting and festival place of the Ionian League.
Its story
The Panionion lies on Otomatik Tepe near Güzelçamlı, on the northern slope of Dilek Dağı. According to ancient sources, the twelve cities of the Ionian League gathered here in honor of Poseidon Helikonios, made joint decisions and held festivals. On the hill, the seating steps of a small assembly building and altar remains can be seen. Some researchers suggest that the actual sanctuary may have been higher up the mountain.
