Kapıdağ Peninsula
Erdek, Balıkesir
A forested peninsula, once an island, joined to the mainland by a sand isthmus; with coves and village roads.
Its story
The Kapıdağ Peninsula was an island known in antiquity as Arktonnesos; an isthmus formed by sand and gravel deposited by the waves connected it to the mainland, making it a textbook example of a tombolo. Most of the roughly 300-square-kilometer peninsula is covered in forest; its highest point is the 808-meter Dedebayırı Tepesi. Stretching between the Erdek gulf to the west and the Bandırma gulf to the east, the peninsula has fishing villages, coves and olive groves. The coastal road is scenic for cycling and driving trips.
