Marmara Island
Marmara, Balıkesir
The largest island in the Sea of Marmara, famous for the marble that gave its name to the sea and the region.
Its story
Marmara Island is the largest island in the Sea of Marmara and Türkiye's second largest after Gökçeada. Known in antiquity as Prokonnesos, the island is famous for its white-gray veined marble, quarried since ancient times; the word 'marmaros' gave its name to both the island and the sea. The north of the island feels the influence of a Black Sea climate, the south that of a Mediterranean one. Reached by sea from Istanbul, Tekirdağ and Erdek, the island has village roads, beaches and nature walking routes.
