Batman Museum
Merkez, Batman
An archaeology museum opened in 2015, bringing together finds from the Ilısu Dam rescue excavations and the re-creations of the Museum Park in its garden.
Its story
The Batman Museum opened to visitors in 2015 in a two-story building with a separate entrance on the Batman Cultural Center campus. About 500 artifacts spanning from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages are displayed in three halls named Paleolithic-Neolithic, Ilısu and Hasankeyf. The core of the collection consists of finds from rescue excavations carried out by the museum at mounds submerged by the Ilısu Dam lake: the famous game pieces and bronze grave goods of Başur Höyük, the standing stone of Gusir Höyük and the figure of the god Bes found in Hasankeyf are the foremost among them. The Museum Park (Müzepark) in the garden features house models from the Gusir and Gre Amer mounds, ancient burial customs, a replica of Hasankeyf's Artuqid Gate and re-creations of village life; hands-on excavation areas are especially appealing for families with children.
