Its story
Lake Aygır lies in a maar crater opened by a phreatic explosion that occurred when groundwater of the Süphan volcano came into contact with magma. The crater is elliptical, measuring about 1.4 × 1.8 km; the lake inside covers an area of about 1.6 km², and its surface is at an elevation of 1,942 meters. The maar walls, rising about 70 meters in the north and 30 meters in the south, surround the lake like a bowl. Fed by rain and the Şorlar Stream coming down from Süphan, the lake freezes in winter. The area has been declared a strictly protected sensitive area; for this reason it should be visited for its views and photos from the shore without interfering with nature. It is reached via village roads on the foothills of Süphan.
