Its story
The museum opened to visitors on 13 September 2005 as a unit of the Ahlat Museum Directorate. It is housed in the former governor's mansion, a registered building made of Ahlat stone. On the exhibition floor, reached by wooden stairs, carpets and flatweaves, examples of blacksmithing, coppersmithing and woodwork, traditional women's and men's clothing, weaving tools and manuscripts are presented in sections. The collection highlights everyday objects from the late Ottoman and Republican periods in particular; some archaeological finds from the Bitlis Castle excavations are also displayed. The garden has stone works reflecting the region's architectural tradition. As it is a small but well-organized museum, it can easily be visited on the same day as the historic buildings in the city center.
