Its story
Lake Nazik is a volcanic barrier lake formed when the products of the Nemrut volcano blocked the front of a valley. At an elevation of about 1,816–1,876 meters, it spreads over an area of more than 40 km²; its water is fresh and fed by snow, rain and spring water. It is known for freezing completely in winter, when it is possible to cross the ice between lakeside villages. The lake is home to mirror carp and the pearl mullet (inci kefali) endemic to the Lake Van basin; more than 60 bird species have been recorded around it. Most of the shore is treeless steppe, with reed beds in places. Its southeastern end, where excess water drains into the Karmış Stream, is a good spot for visitors coming from Ahlat to see the lake; summer is ideal for its quiet scenery and birdwatching.
