Its story
Akgöl is a karst lake of about 12 km² formed in a polje basin in Yeşilova district. Because its water is very salty, no fish live in it; in the dried-out parts, salt deposits give the basin a white appearance. Once drained for farming, the lake began filling with water again after it became clear that the salty soil was unsuitable for agriculture. Today it is an important refuge for waterbirds, flamingos above all, and attracts birdwatchers.
