Dur Yolcu Monument
Eceabat, Çanakkale
Lines of poetry written in giant letters and a soldier figure on the Kilitbahir ridge, visible from the Strait and the Çanakkale shore.
Its story
The Dur Yolcu (Stop, Traveler) Monument was created by writing the opening lines of Necmettin Halil Onan's poem 'Bir Yolcuya' (To a Traveler) in giant letters on the hill above Kilitbahir. The inscription was laid out on the hill in 1960 on the initiative of soldiers and was renewed in 2019. Beside it are the date March 18, 1915 and the silhouette figure of a soldier. The monument can easily be read from the Çanakkale shore and from ferries passing through the Strait; from the nearby road you can also look out over the narrowest part of the Strait.
