Its story
Troy is a settlement on Hisarlık Tepesi near Tevfikiye village that was destroyed and rebuilt many times from around 3000 BC to the Roman period. Archaeologists identify nine main layers here, from Troy I to Troy IX; the Bronze Age city appears in Hittite documents as Wilusa. The Trojan War described in Homer's Iliad made the city world-famous. Brought to light by Heinrich Schliemann's excavations in the 1870s, part of the site's finds were taken abroad. The walls, ramp, megaron buildings and remains of the Temple of Athena can be seen along the walking path; the site has been a historical national park since 1996 and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1998.
