Diyarbakır Archaeological Museum
Sur, Diyarbakır
A museum in historic buildings in İç Kale displaying finds from regional excavations, from Körtik Tepe to Zerzevan.
Its story
Founded in 1934 in the Zinciriye Madrasa, the Diyarbakır Museum has now moved to 19th-century buildings in İç Kale, and the museum complex opened on 25 May 2015. Its chronological and thematic exhibition buildings display artifacts from the Neolithic to the Ottoman period. The decorated stone vessels of Körtik Tepe and finds from the excavations at Çayönü, Ziyaret Tepe, Üçtepe, Gre Filla and Zerzevan Castle are the highlights of the collection; more than 36,000 artifacts are registered in its inventory. It is easy to combine a museum visit with the Artuqid Arch, the gallery in the Church of St. George and the Hazreti Süleyman Mosque in İç Kale. Seeing the museum before going to the mounds in the region also makes the sites easier to understand.
