Its story
Commissioned by Behram Paşa, governor of Diyarbakır, the mosque was begun in 1564 and completed in 1572 and is counted among the works of Mimar Sinan. Its facades, with alternating black basalt and light-colored stones, combine local stonework with the classical Ottoman plan. The interlocking technique used in the stone arrangement above the entrance is a detail that has attracted researchers' attention. Inside are 16th-century İznik tiles. Located in the Ziya Gökalp neighborhood near Melik Ahmet Caddesi, the mosque is one of the most magnificent of Sur's monumental Ottoman-period mosques.
