Its story
The house just north of the Ulu Mosque was built in 1733, and the poet Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı was born here on 2 October 1910. Bought and repaired by the Ministry of Culture, the house opened as a museum in 1973; after being rearranged in 2011–2012, it welcomes visitors with a renewed exhibition. Built of basalt stone, the house is designed for the local climate, divided around the courtyard into summer, winter, spring and autumn sections; 'cıs' decorations on the courtyard walls soften the dark basalt. The fourteen-room house displays the poet's personal belongings, such as his pen, comb, cufflinks and passport, as well as his letters and photographs. The Ahmed Arif Literature Museum is right next door.
