Its story
Çayönü is a broad mound on the banks of the Boğazçay, near the village of Sesverenpınar (Hilar), about 7 kilometers southwest of Ergani. Identified in 1963 in a joint survey by the universities of İstanbul and Chicago, the site was excavated under Robert Braidwood, Halet Çambel and Mehmet Özdoğan, making it possible to follow step by step the transition from settled hunting and gathering to farming and animal husbandry. The earliest traces date to around the 10th millennium BC; grill-plan buildings and monumental structures of large stones such as the 'Flagstone Building' (Saltaşlı Yapı) are the site's standout finds. It can be visited together with the Hilar rock tombs just south of the mound; some of the finds are in the Diyarbakır Archaeological Museum.
