Devegeçidi Bridge
Yenişehir, Diyarbakır
A historic bridge with black stone facing over the Devegeçidi Stream, about 20 km north of the city, and the picnic area around it.
Its story
The Devegeçidi Bridge spans the Devegeçidi Stream, a tributary of the Tigris, about 20 kilometers north of Diyarbakır. There is no inscription on it giving its construction date; some sources call the structure the Murad IV Bridge and state that it was built during the Baghdad campaign. GoTürkiye, however, mentions the bridge among Artuqid-period buildings, so its dating is debated. Locals use the name Cümek Köyü Köprüsü, and old maps the name Karaköprü. Where the finely dressed black stone facing has fallen away, the rubble fill inside can be seen. The area around the bridge is used as a picnic spot and, being close to the city, is good for a short nature break.
