Its story
Eğil Castle is built on a single rock mass overlooking the Dicle Dam Lake, surrounded on three sides by deep valleys; on the fourth side, defense was provided by cutting into the rock. GoTürkiye states that the castle was built in the Assyrian period and that the inner castle belongs to this period, while the outer walls belong to later periods. On the west-facing side is a relief of an Assyrian king with a long cuneiform inscription. Domed 'royal tombs' carved into rocks near the castle and a rock church can also be seen. As archaeological work is ongoing at the castle, access to some sections may be limited. The castle is visited together with the district's tombs of the prophets and the dam lake.
