Hasan Paşa Han
Sur, Diyarbakır
A two-story Ottoman han opposite the Ulu Mosque, built between 1572 and 1575 by Vezirzade Hasan Paşa.
Its story
The han was built between 1572 and 1575 by Hasan Paşa, son of Sokollu Mehmed Paşa and governor of Diyarbakır, opposite the eastern entrance of the Ulu Mosque. Built with alternating courses of black and white stone, the two-story building consists of rooms arranged around a large arcaded courtyard. Simeon of Poland, who came to the city in 1612, mentions the han's stables holding hundreds of animals and its courtyard with a pool; Evliya Çelebi and 19th-century travelers also described the building. Long used as a merchants' han, it is considered the second-largest han in Diyarbakır. Although there are various shops in its courtyard and rooms today, it is open to visitors who stop by to see the historic building.
