Its story
The building, also known as the Kale Mosque, Nasiriyye or Murtaza Paşa Mosque, was built according to the inscriptions on its minaret in 1160, in the İnaloğulları (Nisanoğulları) period. In the Ottoman period it was enlarged in the time of Süleyman the Magnificent and, in 1631–1633, repaired by Silahtar Murtaza Paşa and enriched with additions such as a tomb and a fountain. Built on sloping ground between two towers of İç Kale, the ensemble consists of a mosque, tombs, a graveyard, a courtyard and an open-air prayer place (namazgâh). The tomb is believed to contain the graves of Companions of the Prophet (sahabe) who are believed to have been martyred in the city's conquest in 639; for this reason the building is also popularly called the Tomb of the 27 Companions. Its square minaret is one of the symbols of İç Kale.
