Its story
The mosque was built in the late 16th century by Melek Ahmed Paşa of Diyarbakır during his governorship; GoTürkiye gives its construction as 1587–1591 and notes that it is mentioned in the Tuhfetü'l-Mi'marin. The influence of Mimar Sinan can be seen in its plan and architecture. The two-story building has vaulted storerooms and shops on the ground floor and the prayer hall on the upper floor; under the west wing runs an abbara, a covered passage giving access to the street. The rows of black and white stone on the north and south facades are striking. With its large courtyard entered through an ornate basalt door, its graveyard and its tile-covered mihrab, the mosque makes a good stop for those strolling the streets toward Urfa Kapı.
