Its story
The Church of the Virgin Mary, also known as the Mor Yakup Church, belongs to the Syriac Orthodox community and is believed to have been built in the 3rd century. The building burned and collapsed several times throughout history; fourteen inscriptions dating from 1533 to 1914 make it possible to trace its repairs and additions. A doorway dated to the Late Roman period and Byzantine traces around the altar are among the church's oldest elements. In the first courtyard, entered through the outer gate, are an ornamental pool and the church building, and in the second courtyard is a garden. Acquiring its present appearance with the 2004–2005 restoration, the church is one of the churches in Diyarbakır where services are still held, and it is located in the streets near Urfa Kapı.
