Its story
The Nebî, or Prophet's, Mosque takes its name from the inscriptions on its minaret, which quote sayings of the Prophet Muhammad with the phrase 'kāle'n-nebî' ('the Prophet said'). The main building is thought to be a 15th-century Akkoyunlu work; an inscription dated 1530 on the minaret states that this part was commissioned by a man named Kasap Hacı Hüseyin. Originally consisting of Hanafi and Shafi'i sections, the mosque took its present form in the 20th century when part of it was demolished and Gazi Caddesi was widened; the minaret was also taken down and re-erected at this time. The late-comers' facade and minaret, built of alternating courses of black basalt and white stone, are among the first buildings seen by those entering Sur through Dağ Kapı.
