Its story
The museum is the house where Ziya Gökalp was born in 1876. Built of black basalt stone at the beginning of the 19th century, the two-story house consists of harem and selamlık (family and guest) quarters gathered around an inner courtyard and passed to the Gökalp family in 1824. According to the Turkishmuseums record, the pool set inside an iwan rather than in the courtyard distinguishes the house from other Diyarbakır houses. Opened as a museum on 23 March 1956, the house displays the writer's personal belongings and documents along with ethnographic artifacts of the region. The archive and library section was damaged in a fire in 2014, and the building was later restored. It is on Gökalp Sokağı, entered from Melik Ahmet Caddesi.
