Its story
Enez was an important port city known in antiquity as Ainos. The castle's exact construction date is unknown; reused pieces in its walls point to older structures, and it is known to have been repaired under Justinian. In the Middle Ages the city came under the rule of the Genoese Gattilusio family; Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror took Enez in 1456. Inside the castle are the old church known as Hagia Sophia and the remains of a chapel with mosaics. From the walls you can look out over the Meriç delta, Dalyan Gölü and toward Altınkum.
