Balak Gazi Monument and Viewing Terrace
Merkez, Elazığ
A monument in the park dedicated to the Artuqid Bey Belek (Balak) Gazi in Harput, and a viewing terrace overlooking Harput.
Its story
The monument commemorates the Artuqid Bey Belek bin Behram, popularly known as Balak Gazi, who took Harput from the Çubukoğulları at the beginning of the 12th century and ruled the region. Balak Gazi extended his rule north as far as Erzincan, became known for his struggles against the Crusaders and was killed in battle in 1124. The monument in the park of the same name is presented by GoTürkiye as one of Elazığ's most striking stops thanks to its position overlooking Harput. Route suggestions recommend enjoying the panoramic view of Harput from the park's viewing terrace and taking a break here with local çedene coffee. Especially toward sunset, the light strikingly illuminates the castle cliffs and the Uluova plain.
