Its story
The first museum in Elazığ was founded in 1965 in a historic building in Harput. When rescue excavations at mounds that would be submerged during the construction of the Keban and Karakaya dams yielded a large number of artifacts, a new museum building was built on the Fırat University campus and opened to visitors on 28 July 1982. The museum, with about 5,185 m² of indoor space, has an archaeology and coin section, an ethnography section and a large carpet and kilim gallery. The artifacts span from the Paleolithic through the Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Ages to the Hittite and Hurrian, Urartian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods; gravestones brought from Tunceli are displayed in the courtyard. It is the best stop for understanding the region's past, now under the dam lakes.
