Its story
The mosque was built in 1866 by Hacı Ahmet İzzet Paşa, governor of Elazığ in the Ottoman period. After standing for about a century, the original building, mainly of mudbrick, was demolished in 1967 under the leadership of an association because of earthquakes and wear; the present mosque was built in its place and opened for worship in 1972. The 20-meter-diameter main dome of the square-plan building rests on four elephant-foot piers and is extended by semi-domes on the sides; its two minarets are about 55 meters high. The stonework on the facades and geometric decoration on the doors and windows are notable. Beneath the mosque are shops arranged to provide income, and it is reported to be one of Türkiye's first mosques with an elevator. It can be visited while touring Postane Square and the bazaar area in the city center.
