Its story
The Keban Dam was built at one of the narrowest gorges of the river, about 10 km downstream of the point where the Karasu and the Murat join to form the Euphrates. Construction of the dam began in the mid-1960s and was completed in 1974; the lake, which began holding water the same year, became one of Türkiye's largest lakes with an area of about 675 km². About 210 meters high, the dam supplied a significant share of the country's electricity in the years it was built. Extensive rescue excavations were carried out between 1968 and 1974 at mounds that would be submerged by the lake; some of the finds are now displayed at the Elazığ Museum. With the dam, the region's climate became milder; picnics, swimming, fishing and ferry trips became common around the lake. From viewpoints around the dam you can enjoy views of the Euphrates valley.
