Its story
The mosque was built in the name of Sâre (Saray) Hatun, mother of the Akkoyunlu ruler Uzun Hasan, after he brought Harput definitively under his rule in 1465. Sources state that the first building was a wooden masjid and that it took its present form through repairs in later periods; an inscription on the qibla wall records a repair in 1585, and it was also altered in the 19th century. The site of the building is the southern part of Buğday Meydanı, one of the great squares of old Harput, near the Cemşid (Cimşit) Hammam. Some historians also suggest that the mosque may have been built by one of Uzun Hasan's sons; another name for the mosque is the Mosque of the Sons of Uzun Hasan. It is an important stop for those who want to see an Akkoyunlu trace alongside the Artuqid-period works in Harput.
