Its story
The hot springs in Ilıca, the Aziziye district center, form when groundwater that descends deep along fault lines and heats up rises back to the surface; the water temperature is around 38–39 °C, and it is classified as a sodium bicarbonate mineral water. It is reported that the springs were opened to public use as baths in the Seljuk period and that Yavuz Sultan Selim (Selim I) and Süleyman the Magnificent stayed here during campaigns; Evliya Çelebi also visited the springs in 1645. The facilities, periodically refurbished from 1964 onward, were renovated and reopened in 2005. The fact that the settlement's old name was Çermug, Armenian for 'hot spring', also points to the antiquity of the springs.
