Its story
According to the three-line inscription above the mihrab, the mosque was commissioned in 970 (1562), in the reign of Süleyman the Magnificent, by Lala Mustafa Paşa, who served as beylerbeyi (governor-general) of Erzurum, and it is counted among the works of Mimar Sinan. The central dome rests on four piers and is supported by semi-domes on four sides; this arrangement is one of the first examples to bring the classical Ottoman plan concept to Erzurum. The tiles in the window lunettes and the short minaret with red stone bands are striking. Of the group of buildings originally founded as a complex, the mosque and its hammam have survived. It shares the same square with the Yakutiye Madrasa.
